Matava has won in the Best in the Marine Environment category at this year’s Virgin Holidays Responsible Tourism Awards 2010 organised by Responsibletravel dot com.
The Judges said “Matava is a beacon for responsible tourism and an example to other dive sites. They maintain a strong commitment to both the conservation of the marine environment and the development of the local Fijian community. All staff and dive guides are from local villages, they have signed an agreement with local villages designating 3 established marine reserves as 100% no-take zones, across large geographic areas, and even succeeded in assisted in getting marine conservation on to the Fijian National Curriculum.” more…

This week we are featuring Matava Resort in Fiji. Matava Resort is located on Fiji’s fourth largest island Kadavu, which is situated 100km south of the main island Viti Levu is one of the few remaining undeveloped islands in Fiji today. Having maintained its strong cultural values the general population leads fairly subsistent lifestyles in sleepy coastal villages dwarfed by mountainous jungles and waterfalls plummeting from the hilltops.

I have NEVER been on a helicopter and I have fruit bats in my stomach. I am so excited to go to Likuliku this way! As they say it’s the only way to fly! I am here with my husband Jeff, ready to take off. It is a beautiful day in Nadi and we have the cameras ready to shoot. As we lift off I cannot believe how much of an exciting ride this is going to be! We just got off our Pacific Sun flight from the Northern Islands of Fiji and we are ready for a break. more…
